H2 Green Steel is building one of the world's first large-scale green steel plants in Boden, northern Sweden, using green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity to replace coal in the iron reduction process. Steel production accounts for roughly 7% of global CO2 emissions, and H2 Green Steel's approach could eliminate up to 95% of those emissions while keeping production within Europe. The venture is strategically important because it positions Europe to lead the decarbonization of heavy industry while reducing dependence on imported steel from China and other regions with less stringent environmental standards.
